Artist's Statement
The artist behind Jamesey, is James Lee, a nonverbal teen with severe autism.
When the pandemic shut down his school, James started painting every day.
At seven, James could not identify colors but he has an instinctive grasp of color theory. Painting is James’ therapy and he often dances while he paints. James paints a layer at a time, varying hue and tone. His mother “edits” the work by covering parts of the canvas with plastic, although James is now learning to “self-edit”. Then James applies another layer of paint. This process is repeated over and over. When James declares that the canvas is “so beautiful”, it moves on to the final stage. He draws his personal iconography of swimming pools and lifesavers with Sharpies and the work is done.
Please support Oak Hill School, James’ autism school, by purchasing a Jamesey.
