Artist's Statement
Harmony of the Soul by Cat Kaufman
As a “found object” assemblage artist, I primarily only work with objects that I find myself or that are gifted to me by others. The subject of Harmony of the Soul is the old organ keyboard. It was gifted to me years ago by a friend who found it by the side of the road with other pieces from the 1880s organ. I hung it high on a wall in my studio until I figured out exactly how I wanted to use it. The jagged pieces of rust add another dimension of texture. I love textiles, so I began winding embroidery thread around the keys, a very rhythmic, & meditative process, which is how it earned the title, Harmony of the Soul.
