Artist's Statement
I was inspired to make this work in order to document my feelings, thoughts and energy surrounding the changed world that I found myself living in during the month of May 2020. Therefore, I entitled the sculpture “May 2020”. The form of a book emerged in the process as I worked with my obsessively repeated elements of steel wire. This is how I work; letting the form emerge from the process.
May 2020 was a chaotic, bizarre, frightening and unusual time as the COVID-19 pandemic was spreading in our country and we were suddenly under stay at home orders. Life as we knew it was changing rapidly with travel restrictions, cancellation of celebrations with friends and family, shortages of food, shortages of consumer products, with restaurants and many stores closed. The utter lack of federal leadership from our President, misinformation and lies made it an even more frightening time.
