Artist's Statement
This painting is part of a series—I call it a serial portrait—I have been working on for over 30 years. The subject is my wife, Colette Crutcher. By portraying her over time, I want to convey as many facets of her subjective experience as I can, with the proviso that I am looking in from the outside, attempting to get at something which ultimately will always remain a mystery. This piece is a rather light-hearted look at some of Colette’s likes and dislikes. Posing for me and wearing glasses fall into the latter category, while her favorite socks, clay, her kiln, and all the items arranged on the table fall into the former category. (Disclaimer—Colette did not actually pose for me while painting; I work from photographs.)
