Artist's Statement
The children in the photo surrounding Emma all had their own opinions of what her gender might have been. Was she a man or a woman, a princess or a clown? It was fascinating to watch as they unpacked her identity in front of her. As young children, they didn’t shy from speaking their minds. Conversely, adults only stared at her and either gawked or gasped in awe at the sight of such a lavishly dressed woman walking through the neighborhood.
As someone who is newly engaged in the discourse surrounding the societal construct of gender, I chose to capture this moment so that it might inspire others to do the same.
