Artist's Statement
I painted Horizons one afternoon in March 2020, when the pandemic was raging and shelter in place orders were coming. I was afraid and uncertain. I painted what I wanted to feel instead. I started with blue washes to get the feel of the ocean – vast and powerful. Then the painting itself took over. It wanted ships and bridges. The water asked to be stormy and then to be still. The painting felt like Japan and woodblock prints. I thought of Hiroshige and the hours I had spent looking at his work while in Rome. This left me feeling contented. Soon the painting was finished and I had a feeling of overwhelming calmness.
