Artist's Statement
I find that there is a convoluted personal process that leads to a painted conclusion. An emotional trigger, set off by the visit of a museum director to my studio, resulted in the creation of a series of immersive paintings in which I was obscuring, borrowing, and tracing elements from one piece to the other. This produced a head and shoulder painting... A patched-up Frankenstein of a figure: “Anger (fear)”.
As I loosened terror’s grip, I slowed down, felt my breath and reined in my emotions, breathing back into feeling the movement of hand across paper. A simple drawing appeared.
As I opened further, I came upon the tragic news story of an emergency room doctor, and my heart opened to the Covid-19 situation on the East Coast, and the sacrifices being made by caregivers to care for the ill. Out of that emotional opening came this painting: “Compassion”.
