Artist's Statement
Untold Gold is a portraiture series that looks at the history of the California Gold Rush through the lens of those that have been left out. The portraits depict historical actors from the time right before the discovery of gold, in what was then called Alta California, to the time of roaring mining camps in the Sierra Nevada foothills after the news spread across the continent. Many of the characters we know such as The Confidence Man or The Dream Seller. But what do we know of Ah Toy or Aunt Maria or Charley Parkhurst, born Charlotte Darkey Parkhurst? And what about the California Indians who tried to maintain their customary practices only to see their lives changed forever as a result of disease and violence? These people and more are the bridge between the past and present I am creating by illuminating untold and erased stories.
