Artist's Statement
"Self-Portrait With Artemis, Slouching Towards Bethlehem" depicts my drawing hanging on my studio wall. Inspired by William Butler Yeats’ “The Second Coming” and the goddess, Artemis, I made the drawing surface out of brown paper shopping bags that were accumulating since Covid safety precautions prevented using the reusable bags to which I had become accustomed.
In addition to depicting the drawing, the painting also incorporates some of my studio tools-- Milk Crates, a stretcher bar, Stool, paint brushes, sumi ink—and the accumulation of my creative acts in the abstraction of paint spills on the studio floor. This painting is a depiction, documentation and a celebration of my studio and my art making practice.
