I paint abstracted portraits. Using a model as the inspiration, I paint not the figure as an object, but the experience of that person at that moment in time. I am interested in illuminating the space between the model and the artist. I invite the viewer to spend time experiencing what I experienced, not judging whether I painted a recognizable portrait. There is more to a person than what they look like.

Whipple 4 of 6 is part of a series of abstracted portraits inspired by an older gentleman with a huge scar down his chest. Whipple allowed me to paint what "opened" and "wounded" look like. He embodied much of the conflict I feel about our current times.
