Artist's Statement
This is a portrait of a victim of the Black Death in the midst of a representation of the invisible microscopic floating particulate vapor surrounding her in beauty and contagion. The idiosyncrasies of her face are known to us because, 400 years ago, her husband rendered her picture before her death. As the present pandemic has shown, we are more voluminous than the bodies we perceive with our eyes. The creation of silhouettes and flowers are part of the tradition of the technique of paper cutting - here these traditions are combined to symbolize the ephemeral nature of the swirl we exude: a wafting plume of bacterias, viruses, pheromones, cells, fumes and motes that envelope us in a cloud at once enticing and compelling, while potentially poisonous and deadly.
