Artist's Statement
Several years ago I discovered this US flag wall mural when wandering in San Francisco's Chinatown to find reference material. It had been created to commemorate 9/11 and express solidarity with the country. By the time I saw it the star field had been partially painted out and the words "God bless America" also were gone. I contemplated these changes and the immigrant experience too. "Faded" is the result. This painting symbolizes the shift the people of this country have made from the solidarity following 9/11 to the bipartisan rancor we have today. Additionally, it points to the current dimming of the founding fathers' vision of what America was intended to be: a beacon to all nations and people for freedom and justice. "Faded" takes on even more meaning in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Use of the term "Wuhan Virus" is resulting in increased discrimination of Asians and Asian-Americans.
