Artist's Statement
Confusion hath made his masterpiece (2020) is an assemblage on wood panel with metal figurines, cut tacks, embroidery floss, paper, glass glitter, rhinestones, silver leaf ink, gouache, acrylic, oil wash and enamel, It is 36” high, 24” wide and 4” deep, and is wall-mounted. The title of the work is a textual fragment from Shakespeare’s theatrical masterpiece Macbeth, and illustrates the ascension and ultimate defeat of the play’s tragic protagonist in the manner of an abstracted topographical map. The oil wash and embroidery floss of the assemblage conceal evidentiary markers, symbols and text, and the viewer is compelled to find meaning from fragmented forms. It is a cautionary object that warns of the corrupting forces of undemocratic rulership and the precipice upon which our own political futures seem placed.
