There is a rhythm that happens when I begin to assemble my paintings and this one began to emerge as a quilt of piano keys. My process starts with a multitude of wooden shims that I paint individually with molten wax pigment (encaustic). As I play and build, stacking and layering the painted shims, I sense an undercurrent moving, a logic that is organizing my thoughts into a syncopated composition of color and form. I call this painting “Take Five”, as an inspired nod to Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond, and my love of jazz, but also for that moment’s edge when we take five—to pause, look and wonder.
