Artist's Statement
Both intimate and utilitarian, the subject of “Studio Crates” are the milk crates that have served to prop up paintings in process for years. The crates, caked with paint and the wall and floor, displaying unintentional marks and spills are a record of the passage of time. By depicting the detritus of my creative process, this painting is a celebration of the act of painting.
On May 25th when I was finishing this painting, I learned of George Floyd’s murder. Filled with rage and sadness for our politically divided nation, I thought to call this painting “America Burns, Colors Bleed.” While I hope to capture beauty through my lens, I also hope to reflect the times that we live in.
