Artist's Statement
PRAYERS FROM ITALY
The idea or concept of praying has always intrigued me. I wondered what a prayer painting would look like.
PRAYERS FROM ITALY is just one from an ongoing series called
THE PRAYER PAINTINGS.
This particular painting was based upon a photograph that was taken by friends who were traveling in Italy. They said the prayers piled in a glass box in a church reminded them of my LOVE LETTER PAINTINGS. There was a sign in Italian on the prayer box which translated read:
“Write your prayers to the Madonna of Mercy and all the community will unite to pray for you. Do not make money offerings”.
Feeling inspired by the photo, I immediately began work on the new series.
