Because She Loves the Cats and the Birds is an allegorical piece about women as protectors of the natural world. She holds her cat as Mary would Jesus, elevating the idea of what an animal can represent. They are crowned with halos, furthering the idea of their divinity. She wears a dress decorated with crested jays that are part of the fabric of her kimono, but also hover slightly above. This painting is a love letter to my cat and the many birds who keep me company in my garden.
