Artist's Statement
The neutral tones of this building and strong abstract shadows cast by the fire escape's horizontal ladder drew me right into this scene. The bright red pops of color commanded my attention as if voicing comments about the events of the day: the impeachment hearings of President Trump and their backdrop of ongoing political division in the US. To me, the grayscale palette suggests a complex situation that is neither black nor white, while the red highlights of the street sign, Resist placard, and Bay Alarm sticker in the right window denote a state of alarm. The closed blinds indicate feelings that the "other side" is "turning a blind eye" to the gravity of the circumstances. I changed some of the words on the street sign to strengthen the message of the painting.
