Prayer for the Greening
Two-Dimensional Wall Art > Fiber (Paper)
27 x 21 x 0.5
The concept of viriditas, or the greening, was my inspiration for this paper cut. Viriditas comes to us from St. Hildegard of Bingen. She used it to convey the vitality, lushness, and constant regeneration of creation. With our world in crisis on so many fronts, I wanted to create an image of hope and deep prayer. Paper was chosen as a metaphor of our fragile existence. My process is like life. While I start out with a general design in mind, I leave room for it to evolve into what it needs to become. So I sketch a little, cut a little with my Xacto knife, and pause to see what the image wants to become. This time it wanted to be life bursting through ripples, spreading abundant life. May it be so.
