Artist's Statement
I enjoy the challenge of painting large San Francisco cityscapes. The city has steep streets because it was built up extremely quickly after the great quake and fire of 1906. The reference photo for “Pastel Summit” was taken of Russian Hill as seen from Coit Tower. I cropped the image to focus on Greenwich and Lombard Streets. I used a palette knife to cut in loads of oil paint and zigzag colors to create buildings and roads to conform to my sense of balance and composition.

Russian Hill’s name goes back to the Gold Rush era, when settlers discovered a small Russian cemetery at the top of the hill. It has been the home and gathering place of distinguished Bay Area Bohemians. Today, there is still a small community of writers and artists on the hill, but for the most part they’ve been driven to other areas by rising rents.
