Artist's Statement
I painted Sandra Bland, Trayvon Martin, Latasha Harlins, Eric Garner, Aiyana Stanley-Jones, and Charleena Lyles in 2018 as a tribute to the black men, women, and children killed by racism in America. This piece is titled for its subjects and inspired by the style and composition of Diego Rivera.
In 2020, while a pandemic is changing the world, the racism and injustice of this country’s past continue. Like Trayvon Martin, Ahmaud Arbery was stalked and hunted by white vigilantes who found protection for their modern-day lynchings in ‘stand your ground’ laws. Like Aiyana Stanley-Jones, Breonna Taylor was murdered by police during a no-knock raid where officers entered without announcing themselves. Like Eric Garner, George Floyd’s final words included ‘I can’t breathe’ as police murdered him while bystanders recorded. May we see and remember these tragedies holistically in our collective consciousness so that they serve as the catalyst for change.
