Artist Statement


Karen spent her career as an elementary school teacher encouraging and guiding children to be creative through many art mediums. Karen began her own journey in a drawing class with Wayne Thiebaud in her freshman year at UC Davis. She has dabbled over the years in workshops for botanical illustration with Chuck Stasek, ceramics, natural and synthetic dyes for fabric and yarn, batik and tie-dye techniques in community arts groups and private studios. Most recently Karen has been painting under the tutelage of Patsy Taylor. Four years ago she picked up a paintbrush and has found a medium that is stimulating, challenging and relaxing. She loves mixing up paint colors and bringing her travels, her lush garden and its residents to the canvas.

This beautiful, graceful California native blooms every summer and is a beacon of light in the garden---especially the pandemic garden. As flowers go, it is a tall one. As artists go, Karen is a short one! This is the artist’s eye view.
