I've been working on a series of paintings with the concept of what it means to be a woman at this time in history. How does society see us? How do we see ourselves?

The portrait created for the de Young Open “Sun Goddess: On the Edge” is of Sunny War, a singer/songwriter friend of mine. I met Sunny about two years ago and was immediately taken by her natural beauty. The exquisite contours of her face and her skin, such rich color and so smooth. I thought what would the powers in the music industry do with her? Hopefully not change her. I applaud her for always keeping it real!!!

I had already been working on a more symmetrical portrait, when the notice about submitting artwork to the de Young open, themed “On the Edge” came out and created a second more “edgy” portrait of Sunny.
