Artist's Statement
This painting honors and portrays health care workers as superheroes, who have help save numerous lives during this deadly pandemic. They are mostly unrecognized but are valued by both the patients and their families for the medical services they have provided. The health care workers use of personal protective equipment such as the medical face masks serve as their first line of defense and protection when caring for their patients.
This virus knows no bounds and can infect anyone who does not exercise proper precautions. It’s essential to wear a face mask as recommended by medical experts to protect not only oneself but also the community in order to prevent or slow down the spread of Covid-19.
I also wanted to represent other uses of masks by different cultures from the museum collection. In addition, I included a universally popular fictional superhero wearing a mask.
