Artist's Statement
Shadows are not the opposite of light, but rather a beautiful and sensuous product of the manipulation of light-a different type of illumination (Junichiro Tanizaki-In Praise of Shadows-1933). I strive to communicate the visual world inner beauty in my work. Shadows are an indispensable element of light. They are transitory, distorted and yet magical. Without them there would be no beauty. In “Run My Shadow” I use a stark black and white composition to communicate a subtle message of tenderness and human fragility. Applying the process of black and white photographic transfer I peel off support paper layers to uncover various depths of darkness in an attempt to create an intimate connection with shadows. The complex world of darkness, so unearthed, is mesmerizing and carries a poignant reality.
