Artist's Statement
"The Reader" is my favorite painting from my cafe series. People are my preferred subjects to paint, since they display an infinite variety of situations and emotions. Lighting is the most important consideration in a realist painting, and I enjoyed this very bold composition, with direct sun and bright reflected light and shadows.
I live and work in Mill Valley, California. My oil paintings represent a variety of subjects including ballet dancers, café scenes, and portraits. I have exhibited at the Sausalito Art Festival, and in galleries ranging from San Francisco, Sausalito, Sonoma, to Chatham, Massachusetts.
