Artist's Statement
Growing up in Chile in a Japanese Chilean family, I saw the sorrow in the eyes of my father and grandfather for the loss of their dreams of going back to the homeland. Dreams that were shattered by the bombing of Hiroshima which killed their families and left them stranded on a continent that they didn’t understand. I created this piece to mend their wounds by making papers that combine mulberry fiber and Yerba Buena, an herb known for its soothing qualities, and I also Boro stitched with thread their sutures.

In this piece, I aim at honoring the lives of Japanese immigrants to Latin America from their arrival as farmers, to their relocation in camps in the US, and their current lives as part of the fabric of Latin American Asians. I am also honoring as well, all immigrants, whose sacrifices create new lives and hope for their descendants.
