Artist's Statement
“Afterlife" from the series of the same name, talks about our fragility within the universe. I began this series as a way of working through my fear and sorrow when 2 of my family members were diagnosed with cancer within months of each other. They both chose to fight for their lives. This made me question - what if you didn’t fight your death? What if you could choose your own afterlife? Would that make it easier to let go of life? I got very existential, without feeling morbid.
The image of the female form is from a black & white negative I shot in my 20’s when I was exploring what I wanted my life to look like. Now, 30+ years later, I have come to believe there is an afterlife, and we create it. The photographs in this series capture the visual exploration of coming to this belief.
