Artist's Statement
This photograph was taken on May 31st in Napa, CA – when it seemed like we were grieving not only George Floyd, but over 200 years of anguish. The protest had just begun when I got there, more and more people arrived; and it started getting very rowdy. At one point the protesters swarmed the street, blocking traffic. I noticed the police beginning to move towards the crowd. I got myself into position to record whatever was going to happen.
It could have gotten very ugly, but the Napa Chief of Police calmly approached and ask the crowd to clear the street. Someone in the crowd yelled out, “Are you with us?” This was his answer. The crowd cheered him and moved back onto the sidewalk.
