Artist's Statement
“Golden Afternoon” is based on a plein air watercolor, painted at Shell Beach in the golden light of the late afternoon. The watercolor had dark silhouettes in the foreground with the light enveloping and dissolving the distant forms, which are typical compositional elements within the American Luminist Painting tradition. I am familiar with the Luminist paintings at the Crocker Museum by Raymond Dabb Yelland and at the De Young Museum of Sandow Birk, and their work inspired me to re-paint my composition of Shell Beach in my studio, larger and in oil.
