Artist's Statement
What inspires me to make my work is my fascination with people from all walks of life. I met Bessam while participating in a London art show and fundraiser for the non-profit, Project 0, which is focused on ocean health. We were assigned to be partners and support each other as we each prepared works on-site for the show. From our shared interest in the environment, we formed a bond and true friendship despite the fact that we are vastly different in many ways. Bessem possesses a certain style and demeanor that I felt compelled to capture in this portrait. As in all my portrait work, objects are tucked in throughout which pay homage to my sitter's personality and add a second story, often known only to us.
The plastic in this piece has been collected off of beaches and shorelines both locally from Marin County and the world over.
