Artist's Statement
RED ONION

This painting began as a subject for a short class on painting “darks”. I was looking for
a bulb which would not die on me quickly and my eye was caught by the color of this
onion in my produce market. It had some shipping damage which added to it’s appeal.
As I worked on it, the little green leaf peeking out began to do what it is supposed to
and grew. And grew and GREW! I put it in water and when the roots emerged, moved
it to a pot with real soil. The beautiful colors as the onion began to slump and the
iridescence of the papery skin were mesmerizing to me. As the focus moved from just
the bulb to a nice composition of a senescing red onion and its leaves, I realized it had
become more than just a practice piece.
