Artist's Statement
I am captivated by bodies and the stories they tell in gesture, form and movement. I created this work (“Surrender”) as part of a project where I filmed and photographed paint poured over people as they recited a mantra about surrender. The series is titled “Ecstasy & Surrender.” It was inspired by my own feelings of holding on to control too tightly, both in my creative process and in areas of my life. The series offers a reflection on the transformation that can occur in surrendering identity, or ego. Each person stood naked and vulnerable as paint covered them for 3-5 minutes. For a brief period, they had an opportunity to live fully within the sensorial experience of their bodies. The expressions I captured through photography and finally in soft pastel reflect ecstatic moments of surprise, delight, fear, shame and sometimes, letting go.
