Like so many in my country, I have been profoundly affected by recent political events. This piece was inspired by Magritte’s “This is Not a Pipe” where he was reminding the viewer of the fact that the image of the pipe was merely an illusion, just paint and canvas. As I listened to political statements in recent years (the orange white and blue era), the utter disregard for truth reminded me of Magritte and how opposite the current sentiment was to his. In our time, it appears a statement is all that is needed to make it so.
