I love to make portraits of older people whose faces show the beauty and depth of having lived interesting lives. Thus was I attracted to my friend Marina, 80 years old at the time, an artist who paints daily, cooks and shares with family and friends, a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is open and generous and I knew she would be comfortable in front of a camera and would easily give me access to her being. I took many pictures with my digital camera. The results were good but when a friend offered the use of his Hasselblad, a camera I knew well from years of owning one myself, I returned another day and placed her in the late afternoon light which raked across her beautiful white hair, mysteriously obscuring some of her face…and I knew I’d nailed it!
