Artist's Statement
Oaks are yucca and palm trees. The symbolic history of these plants reflect my own family history in CA. My father was born in the Central Valley to a Mexican father and Indigenous-Mexican mother - occasional migrants, lifelong dancers. My mother grew up in a family who performed racial and ethnic-otherness - the native, the savage, the chief, the Indian - in the Hollywood film industry and in Disneyland parades of the 1920s-1970s. In Oakland Native, I weave together this family history and the larger CA history of reframing race in this country. Black and White becomes Hollywood Hawaiian, Hollywood Indian, Hollywood Indigenous, creating and spotlighting acceptable shades of Brown, while the history behind the spotlight disappears in the shadows. This piece is at once a self-portrait (I was born in Oakland) and the view when I drive home on the 580 heading west. Oaks are palm trees and yucca.
