My work thematically investigates deconstruction, with fiber as my primary focus and the monotype process as a means of capturing spontaneity, unpredictability or uncertainty. Through the deconstruction of textile materials - in this case, the pulling of threads - my intention is to capture a moment of unraveling, where structure begins to unweave itself exposing the vulnerability just beneath the surface - the fragility of existence both in the natural world and in human experience.
I began working on the Inner Nature series in response to the recurrent and devastating fire seasons that have ravaged Napa County. I wanted to depict the cycle of destruction and renewal that Northern California is annually facing. Inner Nature 3, which was printed a week before Covid lockdown, starkly depicts the raw beginnings of coming undone, much like our current landscape.
