Artist's Statement
I've always been fascinated by music and its ability to transport people with its evocative magic. It seems to perfume the air with atmosphere, removing us from our present surroundings and enmeshing us in its rhythms. I particularly enjoy painting from live performers, whether professionals of just people making music together. I'm intrigued by the succession of expressions that flit over their faces. Their energy is tremendous, and it comes through in the art.
My paintings usually begin with an inspiration - a color, a pose, an expression. I am often deeply moved by the way the light illuminates an object, the power, the mystery! From that evocative beginning comes a journey, full of risk, uncertainty and restatement. I persevere, exploring themes, implications and deeply felt personal intuitions till all that is left rings true.
