Artist's Statement
Following a recurring theme in my work, Fracture III challenges the philosophical tradition stating that contrasting concepts stand as irreconcilable polar opposites and, consequently, that we live in a world of either/or, a world of exclusion.
I intend for the form to simultaneously appear heavy and light, dark and luminous, all at once solid and decaying. Qualities preconceived as polar opposites purposefully coexist in a perpetual state of oscillation. I cherish that we move from permanence to ephemerality, or from line to surface without any apparent contradiction, but in a seamless back and forth movement that blurs definitions.
I like to think that this oscillation between opposing concepts mirrors our human condition, and if the work is at all destabilizing, it may be because it brings us away from the comfort of established norms and strict definitions and closer to our fundamental nature: one of ambivalence and continuous transformation.
