Artist's Statement
I like to draw scenes that tell stories - not necessarily actual ones, but possible ones. When I started this scene of a homeless person sitting in an alleyway, I had planned for him to be alone. But then, another person appeared in the corner of my drawing pad, and soon became central to it. My family started theories about who he was, how he felt, how the two people might be related. I don’t know, honestly. For those of us who are not personally affected by homelessness, it is such a ubiquitous part of life in the Bay Area, that we start to get desensitized to the many faces that it has. So I think my drawing is probably less about people living on the edge of society, but rather about how other people see them.
