Artist's Statement
This painting took over two years to complete. Typically I work on smaller-sized canvases and panels and I struggled with the larger format. I never have a specific picture in mind when I begin a project and this painting went through several re-works before it was complete. This work is typical of my style of playful abstraction comprised of many layers of paint, glazes, biomorphic as well as geometric shapes and patterns. A painting is finished when it strikes a balance across all elements. I find my inspiration to make art comes from music, scientific illustration, 70's science fiction, video games, ancient Roman sculpture, quilts and folk art, especially tole painting which I started making in middle school. I work full time in Information Technology as a systems engineer and the title of this painting, "_M8[Sl{_" is a copy of one of my company's randomly generated passwords for my user logon. In this work, a large star at the top of the painting sits "on the edge" of a landscape populated by biomorphic and geometric forms.
