Artist's Statement
As a parent and teacher I have had a front row seat since the spring to the effects that social isolation has on children and youth. Trying to keep everyone safe, we keep children separate and often in front of screens, and I worry that at some point they will simply stop asking when they can have their next get-together with peers. When I first saw the social distancing circles in Dolores Park, I had a vision of two kids pop in my mind, standing on the edges of their families’ circles, wondering if they should listen to what they are told all day long - “keep your distance”, “give people space” - or whether they should do what is most natural, and mentally healthy for them, namely to just toss that ball.
