Artist's Statement
This work is centered around personal narratives and in its creation takes elements from crafting lyrics within song structures, specifically using the idea of the ‘double entendre’, ‘triple entendre’ as a visual vehicle for multiple meanings simultaneously. Playing upon themes of the mask as a device of concealment and self-preservation, that of doubling the appearance between the subject itself and appearance; to magnify the self or create deviation, introduce conflict and disruption within various gazes. The mask as a navigation tool that through time takes up its own significance and meanings as experiences build – often times distant in reasoning from its initial necessity. The act of removing the mask upon realizing the structures we’ve built within our minds - ideas, relationships, memories – to be false as the result of new truths, revelations in current times, lessons in self-informing experiences – this being a singular act creating new tensions within external environments.
