‘A Moment of Hate’

December 1958. A man screaming and yelling at the cashier of the Hardware store. "You trying to Jew me down? You filthy Jew! Go back to where you came from. No one wants you here!"
It frightened me. It changed me. I did not know what Jew even meant.
I had never felt such anger. This is the day I was told by my father that I was a Jewish girl.
“This is hate,'' he told me.
I was not raised with religion. Only birthdays were celebrated. I used to be chased home from school by a pack of boys who threw rocks at me and called me Black Jew...Dirty Jew for 3 years..until we moved away. I never told my parents...and the hate just kept on comin. I feel right now I have to illustrate these memories.
