Artist's Statement
WATCH YOUR STEP, is part of a series of urban landscape paintings, which were found within walking distance from my San Francisco’s Mission district home. Often, I get caught up in commonplace scenes, everyday encounters easily overlooked by others. These unregistered glimpses, though somewhat camouflaged and of which we all too often take for granted, can become astonishing compositions from within the routines of daily life. This painting is simply of a portion of a sidewalk at a corner – a pedestrian crossing located at Market Street and Gough Street. The angle, the repetitive bumps of the visual aid Tenji blocks, the various colors and primarily the geometric composition inspired me. I was attracted by what would at first be an abstract geometric design, was part of our everyday urban experience. In submitting work to de Young’s Open Exhibition the cautionary “Watch Your Step” seemed appropriate to “On the Edge.”
