Artist's Statement
‘Peahen Arms’
I grew up in Detroit.
As nite took over the hood girls on my street would congregate.
I was drawn to their powerful confidence.
Their big hair, their big mouths, their big ideas.
Getting ready for anything, on the edge, full throttle.
Unsteady life at home made me want to be them.
The courage to defend and protect and be fearless.
Collaged from the printed interiors of envelopes cut, snipped, torn and pasted.
These works defy their origins.
Educated as both a painter and printmaker in search of the immediate, I learned to paint in black and white. Printmaking gave me my love for texture with black etched line. A finite palette is part of my identity.
Collage as a medium is limitless. Envelopes rescued from trash cans world over,
offer up patterns from which to build.
My work is a result of discovery and memory.
