Artist's Statement
One of the great advantages of making art is the time it gives me to organize my thoughts and give coherence to my ramblings. Consciousness for me is messy, cluttered with words and images that are inextricably bound together. With my paintings I can tell stories, make music and discover new connections.
My aesthetic values developed in part from my years of making 3-D objects with clay, letting texture and form guide the creative process. The considerable energy expended was always evident in the final results that captured the rhythm of the physical process.
That physical rhythm drives every painting I make. It is a discordant lyricism as if Thelonius Monk was accompanying me in creating new worlds. It is within this context that Panstheism: Making Sanctuary was formed, in the hope we all learn to rely on ourselves to make a safe space during the current Pandemic.
