Artist's Statement
My painting, “Torn and Frayed” was made in 2018 after Trump had been in office for two years, and it was crystal clear to me that he was a danger to the fabric of our democracy. As someone who studied Italian Renaissance painting and has been using drapery for decades as a cornerstone of my paintings and mezzotint engravings, it felt fitting to use a torn up American flag to convey my concern and dismay. But it was a little painful to tear up the flag, so the painting has a kind of order and beauty as well. Now, however, I am finishing a follow-up painting that is much darker and more torn up.
