Artist's Statement
I was working on a series of colorful mixed-media work in which I explore a contemporary, exaggerated, and dynamic approach to portraiture when I met Benjamin. He is a former dancer who has great posture and control over his body, but I wanted to capture his amazing jawline.
I see potential in new as well as found or discarded material, and I collect a varied assortment of textiles, embroideries, and trims. In this piece I combined various line-drawing media, textiles, and oil-painting techniques to construct a portrait that conveys the emotion and character of Benjamin.
I work methodically by combining wet and dry mixed-media techniques in order to create an image that is part drawing, painting, and surface textile application.
Ultimately, my goal is to show the spirit of the model’s true self and share that emotion through each piece.
