Full Decade Later
Two-Dimensional Wall Art > Fiber (Silk)
16 x 40 x 1.5
I was inspired to create this quilt for a two-person show in 2018 in collaboration with conceptual needlework artist Margaret Timbrell in which we made art using comments that others have made to us about our artwork. In this quilt, titled “Full Decade Later”, two versions of Margaret react to the comment “Your art is even more appalling to me now, a full decade later”. By depicting her dubious reactions, the piece empowers her to reclaim the comment in a humorous and quietly subversive way. The brightly colored, cheerful flowers and pop style of the quilt are a counterpoint to the look and intent of the comment itself, while the fractured quilting style creates tension. The title of the show (Not Bad) refers to a comment we had both received about our artwork, and also references how women artists and their work are so often dismissed, underrepresented or overlooked.
